Weekend in Milan: Park, Art, Shopping, and Gelato!

We spent the past weekend in Milan as a belated Father's Day celebration. J wanted to see Da Vinci's Last Supper so we decided to take a weekend road trip. Milan is about 3.5 hours away by car.

Here are some highlights from our weekend:

Park Sempione: The main park in Milan is located behind a large castle and is wonderful. The subway stop drops you in the front of the castle so we walked through the castle into the park. We spent both mornings in the park - there was a large play area, small train, and small car ride in the playground area of the park. S loved it! She played a lot and loved riding the small train. We also watched some turtles playing in one of the ponds. I loved this park - it was great!

Art: We decided to do a walking tour that included both an art gallery and the Last Supper. Our tour group included about 20 people and S was of course the youngest. The art gallery was first and was quite interesting- the tour was about an hour and highlighted many of Da Vinci's works and drawings. We then walked to the Last Supper and awaited our allotted 15 minute time. The 15 minute viewing was great. The Last Supper is breathtaking and The crucifixion was interesting as well. I am definitely glad we chose this tour as we were able to get many more details than we would have had we gone on our own.

Shopping: The shopping in Milan is great- from the high end stores like Prada to the stores I miss in the US (Banana, Gap, Disney), there was great shopping. We didn't buy much but we did find a new shirt for J and a Sofia the First Doll for S.

Gelato: and the highlight for me was the delicious gelato. We had three different kinds. The first was a touristy place on the Duomo Square and was just OK. The second was at Cioccolati Italiani and was delicious- they actually put melted chocolate in the bottom of the cone to add to the deliciousness. The third was as Botega Gelateria which was walking distance from our hotel and also quite yummy- they had a wide range of fruit flavors so we tried strawberry, mango, and kiwi among the three of us.

Other Highlights: The Duomo is of course gorgeous - I am so glad we got to see it! Our hotel had a nice pool that we played in and also a rooftop terrace that we went to each morning after breakfast and two of the three evenings for the view.

All in all, we enjoyed Milan and really enjoyed our weekend road trip together.
