First Trip to Chamonix

We decided to take advantage of the September 6 holiday in Geneva and spend the day in Chamonix, a beautiful town in the French Alps that is about a 1 hour drive from our apartment. It had been on my list to visit since we arrived and the weather seemed perfect for a visit.

After about 30 minutes in the car, we started to see the beautiful Alps appearing before us through thin clouds. As we got closer to Chamonix, the clouds disappeared and we had a beautiful view of the Alps. The drive was gorgeous too - there were waterfalls off to the sides and lots of easy twists and turns.

We arrived in the city center and easily found a place to park. I had an idea of what I wanted to do during the day, so we wandered to the Tourism Office to confirm that the cable car I wanted to take was open (it was!). After a short, uphill walk we arrived at the station and were quickly on our way up. The views of Mont Blanc only got better and better! J and I expected beautiful views, but our expectations were well exceeded. S enjoyed the ride up and was really intrigued with the many hang gliders around us. We had lunch at the top and also walked around a bit.

Once back in town, we walked the streets a bit and decided to have some gelato before heading home.

It was a great day and I love that this city is only a 1 hour drive from us. We will definitely be going back for skiing and general fun.
